01
Littleroot Town and Route 101
02Set the clock, rescue Professor Birch, choose Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip, and start north toward Oldale.
Oldale Town and Route 103 Rival
03Heal in Oldale, collect the free Potion, beat Brendan or May on Route 103, and return for Poke Balls and Running Shoes.
Route 102
04Catch the first real party members, clear the short trainer line, and reach Petalburg City.
Petalburg City
05Meet Norman, complete Wally's catching tutorial, restock, and leave through the west gate.
Route 104 and Pretty Petal Flower Shop
06Work through both sides of Route 104, mark Cut and Surf items for later, and enter Petalburg Woods.
Petalburg Woods
07Catch Shroomish or Slakoth if desired, protect the Devon researcher, and leave the forest with the Great Ball reward.

08Pick up HM01 Cut, check Trainer School items, prepare a Rock answer, and enter the first Gym.

Starter Choice
All three Hoenn starters are viable in Emerald, but they ask different things from the rest of your team. Mudkip is the smoothest full-game pick, Torchic rewards a little early training with huge Fighting coverage, and Treecko is the fast technical choice that wants better backup into Fire, Flying, and Ice matchups.

Mudkip is the safest recommendation for a first Emerald playthrough or a low-friction badge run. |
Quick pick: Choose Mudkip for the easiest main story, Torchic for the highest payoff after early training, or Treecko if you want speed and do not mind building a more deliberate supporting team.
